How Can You Overcome Difficulties Through the Torah of Israel?
Life is full of challenges - whether personal, financial, health-related, emotional, or spiritual. The Torah of Israel gives us powerful tools for dealing with any difficulty, through faith, prayer, wisdom, and a deep understanding of the role challenges play in our lives.
The Sages teach: “For whom the Lord loves, He corrects” (Proverbs 3:12) - difficulties are stages in a process of growth, not punishments.
How does the Torah help us deal with difficulties? Let’s delve deeper.
1. Understanding That Everything Is Under Divine Providence - Nothing Is Random
One of the central principles of the Torah is that God guides the world with personal providence - everything that happens to us is part of a divine plan.
As it is written in Psalms (37:23): “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord, and He delights in their way.”
The takeaway: If something difficult happens to me - it’s not by chance! There is a message here, a lesson, a preparation for something greater.
What can you do? Instead of asking “Why did this happen to me?”, it’s better to ask “What can I learn from this?“
2. Seeing Difficulty as an Opportunity for Growth
The Sages teach us that every difficulty is a test whose purpose is to strengthen us!
As it is said in the Talmud (Berakhot 5a): “If a person sees that suffering comes upon him - let him examine his deeds.”
An example from the Torah: Moses went through countless difficulties - he was pursued in his childhood, grew up in Pharaoh’s palace, fled to the desert, led a stiff-necked people - but all of this prepared him for his role as the greatest leader!
What can you do? When facing difficulty - instead of breaking down, ask: “How can I turn this into a springboard for growth?“
3. Prayer - The Power to Change Reality
Prayer is the most powerful tool for dealing with difficulties - not just to ask for help, but to change ourselves and our reality.
As it is written in Psalms (145:18): “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him - to all who call upon Him in truth.”
Examples: Hannah, who could not have children - prayed from the depths of her heart and merited the prophet Samuel. The people of Israel at the Exodus from Egypt - cried out to God and He redeemed them.
What can you do? Turn to God in personal prayer! You don’t need to know how to pray from a prayer book - you can simply talk to God like you would talk to a father who loves you!
4. Joy and Faith - The Power That Changes Reality
True joy breaks through difficulty - because it connects us to God!
As it is written in the Book of Nehemiah (8:10): “For the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov taught that it is forbidden to be in sadness! Even when it’s hard - precisely then one must strengthen oneself with joy, because joy draws divine light into our lives.
Example: Joseph the Righteous - after everything he went through (sold into slavery, imprisoned) - he remained joyful and faithful, and in the end became viceroy of Egypt!
What can you do? Listen to uplifting music. Read stories about righteous people who inspire. Say “Thank God” even when it’s hard - because it opens gates of blessing.
5. Torah Study - A Source of Strength and Inner Peace
Study connects us to God, strengthens faith, and gives us tools to deal with any situation.
As it is written in Psalms (119:92): “Had Your Torah not been my delight - I would have perished in my affliction!”
Example: Rabbi Akiva began his life as a simple man, faced extreme poverty, but through Torah study became the greatest of the Sages!
What can you do? Study even a little Torah every day - it gives tremendous strength! Read books of faith like “Mesillat Yesharim” or “Likutey Moharan”
6. Love of Israel and Kindness - A Power That Brings Salvation
When a person helps others - they themselves receive salvation!
As the Sages said (Shabbat 151b): “Whoever has compassion for God’s creatures - Heaven has compassion for them.”
Example: Job was sick and suffering, and only when he prayed and helped others - did he himself heal!
What can you do? Help someone else - it opens gates of blessing for you too! Say a kind word to another person - it will come back to you many times over!
7. Trusting in God - Everything Is for the Best!
At the end of every difficulty - great good awaits! God leads us to exactly the right place.
As the Sages said (Berakhot 60b): “Whatever the Merciful One does - He does for good.”
Example: Sometimes people experience difficulty - and then discover in hindsight that it was the best thing that ever happened to them!
What can you do? Say “Everything is for the best!” even when you can’t see it. Remember that every trial strengthens us and causes us to grow.
