Parashat Ki Tavo - Third Aliyah

This day, and a covenant that has two sides

The aliyah focuses on the bond between Israel and God and on the mutual commitment created out of the covenant. Moses stresses that the commandments are not meant to remain external knowledge alone, but to be done with all the heart and all the soul. The keeping and the doing are an expression of belonging, not only of technical obedience.

Israel take God upon themselves as their God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments and His judgments, and to listen to His voice. In parallel, God sets Israel apart to be for Him a treasured people and to keep all His commandments. There is a two sided movement here: the people choose to give themselves to the covenant, and the covenant grants them identity and role.

The aliyah closes with a wider calling: Israel are destined to be for praise, for name, and for glory, and to be a holy people to God. That is, keeping the commandments is not only a system of private obligations, but a way to build a people that has a distinct spiritual and moral identity.

This day, a commitment that renews itself

Even after years of journey and study, the Torah stresses the present. At the level of the idea, receiving the commandments is not an event that stayed in the past. It demands an inner renewal in every generation and on every day.

Keeping and doing need to reach the heart as well

One can carry out an act without being connected to it. The aliyah stresses that the complete service includes the heart and the soul as well. The deed matters, but so does the inner direction that leads to it.

A covenant is a bond that holds mutuality

Israel take upon themselves to walk in the ways of God, and God sets them apart as a treasured people. This creates a picture of a bond in which identity and commitment are tied to one another.

A treasured people is also a responsibility

The distinction is not presented only as an honored status. It appears together with the demand to keep the commandments. The higher the status, the greater the moral and spiritual responsibility.

Name and glory are built out of a way of life

The praise and the glory are not presented here as an achievement of power alone. They are tied to keeping commandments, to walking in the way, and to listening to the voice of God. That is, honor is built out of the quality of a life.

Holiness is not created by declaration alone

To be a holy people requires a consistent way of keeping, of doing, and of walking in the ways of God. Holiness is a process built out of repeated choices, not only out of a given identity.
