יז וַיַּקְרֵב אֶת הַמִּנְחָה וַיְמַלֵּא כַפּוֹ מִמֶּנָּה וַיַּקְטֵר עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ מִלְּבַד עֹלַת הַבֹּקֶר׃

יח וַיִּשְׁחַט אֶת הַשּׁוֹר וְאֶת הָאַיִל זֶבַח הַשְּׁלָמִים אֲשֶׁר לָעָם וַיַּמְצִאוּ בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן אֶת הַדָּם אֵלָיו וַיִּזְרְקֵהוּ עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ סָבִיב׃

יט וְאֶת הַחֲלָבִים מִן הַשּׁוֹר וּמִן הָאַיִל הָאַלְיָה וְהַמְכַסֶּה וְהַכְּלָיֹת וְיֹתֶרֶת הַכָּבֵד׃

כ וַיָּשִׂימוּ אֶת הַחֲלָבִים עַל הֶחָזוֹת וַיַּקְטֵר הַחֲלָבִים הַמִּזְבֵּחָה׃

Parshat Shemini - Second Aliyah (Leviticus 9:17-23)

After the sin-offering and the burnt-offering, Aaron also brings the meal-offering: he fills his palm from it and burns it on the altar, in addition to the morning burnt-offering. Then he moves to the people’s peace-offering: he slaughters the ox and the ram, his sons hand him the blood, and he sprinkles it around the altar. The fat portions - the fat tail, the covering fat, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver - they place on the breast, and Aaron burns the fat on the altar. The breast and the right thigh Aaron waves as a wave-offering before God, as Moses commanded.

At the conclusion of the service, Aaron lifts his hands toward the people and blesses them, then descends from performing the sin-offering, burnt-offering, and peace-offerings. Afterward, Moses and Aaron enter the Tent of Meeting, come out, and bless the people again - and then the climactic moment occurs: the glory of God appears to all the people.

Insights from the Aliyah

The meal-offering “besides the morning burnt-offering” - holiness connects to routine. The Torah emphasizes that the meal-offering comes in addition to the daily burnt-offering. The message is sharp: even on a day of revelation, the daily order is not suspended. On the contrary - revelation settles on a foundation of consistency. Anyone seeking great moments without faithfulness to routine is building a fire without wood.

Peace-offerings - not just atonement, but wholeness. After the sin-offering and burnt-offering come the peace-offerings. This is a transition from correction and devotion - toward peace, connection, and abundance. There is a statement here: the purpose of the work is not merely to erase sin, but to build a restored state where there is relationship, blessing, and closeness.

The fat ascends, the breast and thigh are waved - directing energy correctly. The fat is burned for God - it is the intensity and essence that rises upward. The breast and thigh are given to the priests through waving - meaning they undergo a “rotation” of consecration before becoming part of life. An important lesson: resources and strengths require direction and consecration, otherwise they are just raw material.

Aaron’s blessing and Moses and Aaron’s blessing - there is a personal blessing and a blessing of the Divine Presence. Aaron blesses the people after his service, and then there is an additional blessing after entering the Tent of Meeting. This teaches that there are two levels: a blessing that comes from a leader who has done his work properly, and a blessing that comes from an encounter with God - and then it is no longer just words, but a reality that reveals itself.

“And the glory of God appeared” - when we do our part to the end. The glory of God appears only after a complete sequence: meal-offering, peace-offerings, waving, blessing, entering the Tent of Meeting and returning. Not at the beginning of the process and not in the middle. This is a powerful principle: revelation does not replace work - it comes after precise work that makes room for it.
