Torah Text (Acharei Mot — Aliyah 4 of 7)

Read the biblical text and try to understand it on your own, before reading the commentary.

יז א וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃

7 Velo yizbechu od et zivcheihem lase'irim asher hem zonim achareihem chukat olam tihyeh zot lahem ledorotam

In this aliyah a strong demand emerges to centralize the sacrificial service in the Mishkan alone. No more “field” sacrifices, no more wild service, but holy service in an orderly path.

Sacrifices, Only at the Mishkan

“Ish ish… asher yishchat shor o khesev… ve’el petach ohel mo’ed lo heviyo… dam yechashev la’ish hahu dam shafakh” (Any man… who slaughters an ox or a lamb… and does not bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting… blood shall be considered to that man as if he had shed blood).

The verse imposes the punishment of karet on one who slaughters outside the Sanctuary. Why? Because in doing so the person disconnects the offering from its spiritual purpose, sacrificing without heart, without order, as if he were practicing idolatry.

The Sacrifice to the Se’irim

“Velo yizbechu od et zivcheihem lase’irim” (And they shall not sacrifice their offerings to the se’irim).

Rashi (Leviticus 17:7) explains: “To the se’irim, that is, to the demons, as in ‘us’irim yerakdu sham’ (and demons shall dance there, Isaiah 13)”. The Torah completely blocks this path. A sacrifice, yes. But only through the priest, only at the Mishkan, only to Hashem.

A Pleasing Aroma, the Priest’s Responsibility

“Vezarak hakohen et hadam… vehiktir hachelev” (And the priest shall sprinkle the blood… and shall burn the fat).

The priest acts as the people’s emissary, not only technically, but as a spiritual mediator. He offers it “lere’ach nicho’ach” (as a pleasing aroma), a symbol that the offering comes from a pure place.

A Closing Thought

The Torah teaches us: spirituality is not unrestrained. Not every “good intention” justifies every action. There is a path. There is a Mishkan. There is a framework. There is holiness.

And this is the secret of life: the encounter with holiness through the right framework.
