Parashat Masei - Second Aliyah

There are aliyot in the Torah that ring like poetry. But this aliyah reads like a travel log: station after station, no stories, no miracles, no instructions. And yet, precisely in this emptiness one can hear a deep echo.

The second aliyah continues the mapping of stations in the journey of forty years. From the wilderness of Sin, through Rephidim, Kivrot Hata’avah, Hazeroth, Rithmah, Rimmon Perez, Livnah, Rissah, Terah. Difficult names, unfamiliar. Almost none of them is mentioned again in the Torah. So why does the Torah devote a whole passage to them?

Perhaps because it comes to tell us: even the forgotten places count. Even the marginal encampments are part of the story. The Torah records the places that left no impression, because the value of a station is not measured by what happened there, but by the very fact that you were there.

There are stations like these in every journey: nothing special happened in them. No success, no failure. Just another day of traveling and encamping. The tendency is to forget them, to move on. But the Torah comes and says: write these stations too. Even the day on which you merely “traveled and encamped” is present in the larger picture.

There is a deep insight here for the refinement of character: to value the continuity, to recognize the beauty in the routine, not to wait only for the peaks. Every station a person stands in, every step he takes note of, is an encampment that was recorded. The message is sharp: when you count all the stations, you discover that even what seems ordinary is part of the miracle.
