Parashat Shelach Lecha - Fourth Aliyah

The fourth aliyah closes on a breaking point. The decree of the forty years is sealed, the people try to repent and fail, and the generation is sentenced to perish in the wilderness.

The Holy One speaks to Moshe and to Aharon, and within His severe address a historic decree is revealed: “Bamidbar hazeh yiplu fig’reichem” (In this wilderness your corpses shall fall) (Bamidbar 14:29) Those who murmured, those who chose not to believe, who spoke evil of the land, will die in the wilderness and not merit to see it.

The Holy One sets measure for measure: “Bemispar hayamim asher tartem et ha’aretz… yom lashanah tis’u et avonoteichem” (According to the number of days you scouted the land… a year for each day shall you bear your iniquities) (ibid., 34) Forty days of sin lead to forty years of wandering. The missed opportunity becomes the punishment, and the punishment becomes a generational educational process.

Suddenly the people awaken. They realize that they sinned and try to repair, but they do so in reverse: “Hinenu ve’alinu” (Behold, we are here, and we will go up) (ibid., 40) Moshe warns: this is not the time. “Al ta’alu… ki ein Adonai bekirbekhem” (Do not go up… for Adonai is not among you) (ibid., 42) And they go up, and they fall. Not every teshuvah is accepted. There is a moment when the door closes, at least for that generation.

Measure for Measure: The Sin of the Tongue On the words “Bamagefah lifnei Adonai” (In the plague before Adonai) (14:37), Rashi explains that this refers to the death fitting for them, measure for measure: they sinned with their tongues, and therefore “their tongues extended to their navels, and worms came out of their tongues and entered their navels” (Rashi on 14:37, based on Sotah 35a).

The Attribute of Mercy Agreed The Ohr HaChaim, on the verse “Ani Adonai dibarti” (I am Adonai, I have spoken) (14:35), asks why the verse opens specifically with the Name “Ani Adonai”. He answers that the explicit Name indicates the attribute of kindness and mercy, and teaches that even the attribute of mercy itself agreed to the decree. When even the attribute of mercy judges with severity, there is no escape from the decree.

True teshuvah requires not only a desire to repair, but precise listening to the time and the place. Teshuvah without listening is another mistake. Precisely from this pain one can learn to discern: when to act, and when to stop.
