Vera'a hakohen vehine ve'or besaram beharot kehot levanot bohak hu parach ba'or tahor hu
In this aliyah we continue to deal with skin afflictions, but this time - in special places on the body: the head and the beard, and also a matter of an affliction called “netek” - an affliction that causes hair to fall.
Summary of the Verses:
Verses 29-30: If a man (or woman) has an affliction on the head or beard, and the priest sees that the appearance is deeper than the skin, and in it is thin yellow hair - this is a netek, tzara’at of the head or beard, and the person is impure.
Verses 31-34: If the affliction is not deep, with no yellow hair - the priest quarantines for seven days. If the affliction has not spread, all the hair around it is shaved (but not the netek itself), and quarantined again for seven days. If the affliction has not spread even after the second quarantine - the person is pure.
Verses 35-36: If after the purification the netek spreads, there is no need to check for further signs - the person becomes impure again.
Verse 37: If black hair suddenly begins to grow in the spot - this is a sign of healing, and the person is pure.
Verses 38-39: If a man or woman has בֶּהָרֹת כֵּהוֹת לְבָנֹת (faded white spots) on the skin - this is an affliction called “bohak”, and it is pure.
A Small Thought for the Way:
The afflictions on the head - the most visible and prominent place - remind us that our visible flaws require special attention.
But sometimes precisely the fleeting, small hairs - like thin yellow hairs - are the sign of what is happening in the depths.
So too in life: things that look small - sometimes testify to deeper roots.
May we always merit to be sensitive not only to outward appearance, but to what is truly happening within the soul - and always to seek healing, from within and from without.
