The people stand at the threshold of the land, and Moshe, the one who merited to lead them for forty years in the wilderness but will not enter with them, delivers his parting words. “Re’eh limadti etchem chukim umishpatim… la’asot ken bekerev ha’aretz asher atem ba’im shamah lerishtah” (See, I have taught you statutes and laws… to do so in the land you are entering to possess, Deuteronomy 4:5). Rashi explains on the next verse: “ushmartem” refers to study, “va’asitem” to practice, and of both together it is said that through this “you will be considered wise and understanding in the eyes of the nations” (Rashi on Deuteronomy 4:6). The Torah is preserved first through learning and then through deeds, and this is the wisdom the nations see from the outside.

Moshe sets a double goal for the people: to keep the Torah, and to guard it in the heart. “Rak hishamer lecha ushmor nafshecha me’od pen tishkach et hadevarim… ufen yasuru milevavcha” (Only take care and guard your soul greatly, lest you forget the things… and lest they depart from your heart, Deuteronomy 4:9). Rashi sharpens both sides of the coin: “When you do not forget them and do them in their true form, you will be considered wise and understanding, but if you distort them out of forgetfulness, you will be considered fools” (Rashi on Deuteronomy 4:9). Forgetting is not only a loss of knowledge, it distorts what remains.

He brings the people back to the peak moment, the revelation at Mount Sinai: the fire burning to the heart of heaven, the divine voice heard but not seen. From here comes the stern warning against any carved image and against bowing to the host of heaven.

But Moshe does not stop at the warning. In prophetic pain he reveals what will happen in the future: “Vehefitz Adonai etchem ba’amim venish’artem metei mispar bagoyim” (Adonai will scatter you among the peoples, and you will remain few in number among the nations, Deuteronomy 4:27). Even before they entered the land, he knows of the exile to come. Yet in the same breath he gives hope: “be’acharit hayamim veshavta ad Adonai Elohecha” (in the end of days you will return to Adonai your God, Deuteronomy 4:30).

Ramban explains that the verse alludes to the redemption from Babylon: “This too is an allusion to the redemption of Babylon, when they returned to God, confessed before Him, and heeded the voice of the prophets” (Ramban on Deuteronomy 4:30), while the future redemption is hinted at the end of the book. The exile was foreseen, and the return was foreseen as well, and it came to pass. This connects to “vahashevota el levavecha” (and take it to your heart, Deuteronomy 4:39): intellectual knowledge is not enough, the words must be brought back into the heart until they live within us.

The aliyah closes with a statement that is the foundation of foundations: “Atah hor’eta lada’at ki Adonai hu ha’Elohim ein od milvado” (You have been shown to know that Adonai is God, there is none besides Him, Deuteronomy 4:35). This is not blind faith, it is knowledge grounded in seeing, hearing, and living history. The aliyah moves between past and future: the memory of Sinai, the warning of exile, the promise of return, and the call to bring it all back into the heart. Our own lives have such cycles too, peaks, descents, and returns, and the question is whether we can restore to the heart the truth we have seen, even when life pulls us elsewhere.
