Ki Tavo is one of those portions that contain almost everything: the celebration of success, historical memory, joy, social responsibility, a national covenant, dizzying blessings and also very harsh warnings. And it all begins, of all things, with a basket of fruit.

The people of Israel stand a moment before entering the land. Moshe teaches them that the great challenge will not only be to conquer the land, but to know how to live once you have already succeeded.

A short and gripping summary

The parashah opens with the commandment of first fruits. A person arrives with the first of the fruit of his soil, but instead of only giving thanks for the harvest, he tells a whole story: the descent to Egypt, the enslavement, the cry, the exodus and the arrival in the land. That is, facing a basket full of fruit, the Torah requires him to remember where it all began. See Deuteronomy 26:1-11.

After that come the tithe of the poor and the care for the Levite, the stranger, the orphan and the widow. The literary message in the parashah is sharp: your abundance does not end with you. Success takes on meaning when it also becomes responsibility toward the one who has nothing. See Deuteronomy 26:12-15.

From here the parashah moves to a dramatic ceremony on Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival. The Torah is written on stones, the people are commanded regarding a national ceremony of writing the Torah, blessing and curse. Afterwards comes the harsh rebuke of Deuteronomy 28, a shattering description of what can happen when a society drifts from the covenant and loses its way.

But toward the end of the parashah comes one of its most powerful moments. After forty years in the wilderness Moshe says:

“And God did not give you a heart to know and eyes to see and ears to hear until this day” (Deuteronomy 29:3).

For forty years they saw miracles, and only now are they beginning to understand what they saw. In a homiletic reading, the verse can be understood as pointing to a late ripening of the awareness of what they lived through.

The real danger begins precisely when everything is succeeding

Notice the opening: the beginning of the parashah does not describe a hungry person in the wilderness. It describes a person who has already reached the land, settled, sown, waited, and now has fruit in his hand.

And here comes the demand to remember Egypt.

This is an idea, not a quotation from a source: perhaps the Torah is identifying a very human phenomenon. In a time of crisis we remember well that we need help. Precisely after success we are liable to start telling ourselves that we did it all alone.

That is why the first fruits are almost a cure for a short memory: at the peak moment of success you return to the story that brought you here.

The first act the Torah describes in relation to the first of the fruit of the soil is not eating, but taking, placing in a basket and bringing.

This is a wonderful detail. You waited months. You ploughed. You sowed. You prayed for rain. Suddenly the first fruit appears.

And the response the Torah sets at the beginning of the parashah is not to fall upon the fruit, but to stop, to bring, to speak and to remember. See Deuteronomy 26:1-10.

An idea that arises from this: sometimes real freedom is not the ability to take at once what is coming to you, but the ability to stop for a second before you take it.

There is one surprising word that connects abundance with disaster: joy

In the passage of the first fruits it says precisely:

“And you shall rejoice in all the good that God your God has given you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is in your midst” (Deuteronomy 26:11).

Notice: this is not a private joy. Inside the sentence about joy are also the Levite and the stranger.

And this creates a very deep idea: in the parashah, abundance that does not know how to go outward to others is abundance in which something is missing. The ideal joy is not only I have, but there is good, and there is room in it for someone else.

The list of curses on Mount Eival reveals a surprising moral test: what do you do when no one is watching

In the list of curses in Deuteronomy 27 there are several transgressions of a hidden character. For example, the first verse in the list refers to making an idol and setting it up in secret, and further on there also appears one who strikes his fellow in secret. See Deuteronomy 27:15 and 24.

From here one may offer an interpretation: a society is not measured only by what people do in the town square. Its real test also takes place in the closed room, in the place where there is no audience and no applause.

This is an almost chilling point: the national covenant deals also with the private secret.

And perhaps the strongest insight: one can see everything and still not understand

The ending we brought earlier speaks of a heart to know, eyes to see and ears to hear only “until this day”. See Deuteronomy 29:3.

And this is a tremendous idea for life.

One can pass through an event and not understand it. One can see a miracle and not take it in. One can meet a person who changed your life and grasp their importance only years later.

Sometimes wisdom does not arrive at the moment things happen, but on the day when the penny suddenly drops about what has already happened.

And this is perhaps the thread that connects all of Ki Tavo: to see your life not only as a sequence of things that happened to you, but as a story you are able to understand, to remember and to give thanks for.

The first fruits say: remember where you came from. The tithes say: see who is beside you. The covenant says: understand that your choices have meaning. And toward the end of the parashah it is said: and now, perhaps at last you have a heart to know.

There are two entries into the land in Ki Tavo

At the beginning of the parashah, the one who brings the first fruits says:

“I declare today to God your God that I have come to the land that God swore to our fathers to give us” (Deuteronomy 26:3).

That is: I have arrived. I am here. I have land, I have a harvest, I have fruit in my hand.

But then the end of the parashah comes, and Moshe says something almost shattering:

“And God did not give you a heart to know and eyes to see and ears to hear until this day” (Deuteronomy 29:3).

Wait. For forty years they saw Egypt, the signs, the wilderness and everything they went through. And only today do they have a heart to know?

This is a homiletic and literary reading, not a quotation from the Sages:

Perhaps Ki Tavo reveals that there are two ways of coming to the land. There is a person whose feet have already reached the land. And there is a person whose heart has arrived as well.

One can be in the land, hold a field, a house, money and fruit, and still not truly understand where one is and what the story is that brought one here.

That is why, precisely when a person brings his first fruit, the Torah does not let him say only: thank you for the fruit. It brings him back to Egypt. He tells of the descent, the affliction, the cry, the exodus and the arrival in the land. See Deuteronomy 26:5-9.

Why? Because a person becomes a true owner of his present only when he understands his past.

And now notice something even more amazing. In the middle of the parashah it says:

“This day you have become a people to God your God” (Deuteronomy 27:9).

What does “this day” mean? After all, Israel had already left Egypt, received the Torah and passed forty years as a people.

But by way of homily one may read here a tremendous message: a people is not born only on the day it goes out from slavery. A people is born anew on the day it understands who it is.

And this creates a beautiful structure inside the parashah. At the start, I have come to the land. In the middle, you have become a people. At the end, a heart to know, eyes to see and ears to hear.

That is, the great journey of Ki Tavo is perhaps not a journey from Egypt to the land of Israel at all. It is a journey of about thirty centimetres. From the feet that reached the land, to the heart that finally arrived there too.

And this is perhaps one of the strongest messages of the parashah for life: sometimes we are already inside the thing we prayed for over years, a family, success, a home, a land, a life, but the soul has not yet taken in that it has arrived.

And perhaps that is why first fruits are needed. To stop. To look at the fruit. And suddenly to understand: I am already here.

The last sentence is a homiletic formulation, not a quotation from a source.

Questions on Parashat Ki Tavo

  1. Why does Ki Tavo open specifically with a basket of fruit, and only afterwards move to a national covenant, blessings and curses?
  2. Why does a person who brings first fruits have to tell the whole historical story of the people of Israel, instead of simply giving thanks for his harvest?
  3. Is it possible that the commandment of first fruits was meant to protect a person precisely from the danger of success?
  4. Why does the word “today” return again and again in the parashah, and is the Torah trying to create a sense that the whole covenant happens anew in every generation?
  5. How can it be that the people of Israel had already been a people for decades, and yet they are told in the parashah that on that day they became a people?
  6. What is the deep connection between the memory of Egypt and the ability to enjoy the fruits of the land of Israel?
  7. Why is the joy of the landowner not described as a private joy, but bound up also with the Levite and the stranger?
  8. Is the Torah hinting that abundance which does not reach the weak in society is abundance that is not yet complete?
  9. Why is it precisely after a person succeeds in growing a harvest of his own that he is required to remind himself that the land was given to him?
  10. What is the meaning of the surprising move in the parashah from the single person holding a basket in his hand to a whole people standing between two mountains?
  11. Why does the Torah command that its words be written on stones precisely at the moment of entering the land? What is there in a stone that is not in a book?
  12. Why is the altar set up specifically on Mount Eival, identified in the ceremony with the curse, and not on Mount Gerizim, identified with the blessing?
  13. Why does the Torah stress that the stones of the altar must be whole and that no iron may be lifted over them? Is there a symbolic idea here beyond the practical detail?
  14. Why does a large part of the curses at the ceremony of Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival deal with things a person can do in secret?
  15. Is the message of the list of curses that the real test of a society is not what it does in public, but what its people do when no one is watching?
  16. Why is the whole people required to answer “amen” to the curses? What changes when a person not only hears a moral principle, but also confirms it with his own voice?
  17. Why are the blessings described as if they come and overtake a person, and not only as something he receives?
  18. Why are the blessings in the parashah relatively short, while the rebuke is long, detailed and so shattering?
  19. Is the length of the curses meant to frighten, or perhaps to show how a society can fall apart stage by stage?
  20. Why do the blessings and the curses sometimes use exactly the same areas of life, such as city, field, harvest, coming in and going out, yet turn reality from one extreme to the other?
  21. Can the blessings and the curses be read as a description of the same external reality, whose meaning changes according to the relationship between the person, the society and the covenant?
  22. Why does a parashah that begins with gratitude arrive later at such difficult descriptions? Are these really two different subjects, or two sides of one idea?
  23. Is the great sin hidden behind the rebuke not only the doing of evil, but the loss of the ability to recognise the good one already has?
  24. Why does Moshe speak only after forty years of a heart to know, eyes to see and ears to hear? Can one live through miracles for years and still not understand what one saw?
  25. And the greatest of them all: is the whole of Ki Tavo built around one idea, that the real challenge for a person is not to reach the blessing, but to know what to do with himself once he has already reached it?
