כג וָאֶתְחַנַּן אֶל יְדוָד בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר׃
3:23 Va'etchanan el Adonai ba'et hahi lemor
כד אֲדֹנָי יְדוִד אַתָּה הַחִלּוֹתָ לְהַרְאוֹת אֶת עַבְדְּךָ אֶת גָּדְלְךָ וְאֶת יָדְךָ הַחֲזָקָה אֲשֶׁר מִי אֵל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂה כְמַעֲשֶׂיךָ וְכִגְבוּרֹתֶךָ׃
24 Adonai Elohim atah hachilota leharot et avdecha et godlecha ve'et yadcha hachazakah asher mi El bashamayim uva'aretz asher ya'aseh chema'asecha vechigvurotecha
כה אֶעְבְּרָה נָּא וְאֶרְאֶה אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן הָהָר הַטּוֹב הַזֶּה וְהַלְּבָנוֹן׃
25 E'ebrah na ve'er'eh et ha'aretz hatovah asher be'ever haYarden haHar hatov hazeh vehaLevanon
כו וַיִּתְעַבֵּר יְדוָד בִּי לְמַעַנְכֶם וְלֹא שָׁמַע אֵלָי וַיֹּאמֶר יְדוָד אֵלַי רַב לָךְ אַל תּוֹסֶף דַּבֵּר אֵלַי עוֹד בַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה׃
26 Vayit'aber Adonai bi lema'anchem velo shama elai vayomer Adonai elai rav lach al tosef daber elai od badavar hazeh
כז עֲלֵה רֹאשׁ הַפִּסְגָּה וְשָׂא עֵינֶיךָ יָמָּה וְצָפֹנָה וְתֵימָנָה וּמִזְרָחָה וּרְאֵה בְעֵינֶיךָ כִּי לֹא תַעֲבֹר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן הַזֶּה׃
27 Aleh rosh haPisgah vesa einecha yamah vetzafonah veteimanah umizrachah ur'eh ve'einecha ki lo ta'avor et haYarden hazeh
כח וְצַו אֶת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וְחַזְּקֵהוּ וְאַמְּצֵהוּ כִּי הוּא יַעֲבֹר לִפְנֵי הָעָם הַזֶּה וְהוּא יַנְחִיל אוֹתָם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּרְאֶה׃
28 Vetzav et Yehoshua vechazkehu ve'amtzehu ki hu ya'avor lifnei ha'am hazeh vehu yanchil otam et ha'aretz asher tir'eh
כט וַנֵּשֶׁב בַּגָּיְא מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר׃
29 Vaneshev bagai mul beit Pe'or
ד א וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁמַע אֶל הַחֻקִּים וְאֶל הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּ וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֵיכֶם נֹתֵן לָכֶם׃
4:1 Ve'atah Yisrael shema el hachukim ve'el hamishpatim asher anochi melamed etchem la'asot lema'an tichyu uvatem virishtem et ha'aretz asher Adonai Elohei avoteichem noten lachem
ב לֹא תֹסִפוּ עַל הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם וְלֹא תִגְרְעוּ מִמֶּנּוּ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת מִצְוֹת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם׃
2 Lo tosifu al hadavar asher anochi metzaveh etchem velo tigre'u mimenu lishmor et mitzvot Adonai Eloheichem asher anochi metzaveh etchem
ג עֵינֵיכֶם הָרֹאֹת אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יְדוָד בְּבַעַל פְּעוֹר כִּי כָל הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הָלַךְ אַחֲרֵי בַעַל פְּעוֹר הִשְׁמִידוֹ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ מִקִּרְבֶּךָ׃
3 Eineichem haro'ot et asher asah Adonai beVa'al Pe'or ki chol ha'ish asher halach acharei Va'al Pe'or hishmido Adonai Elohecha mikirbecha
ד וְאַתֶּם הַדְּבֵקִים בַּידוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם חַיִּים כֻּלְּכֶם הַיּוֹם׃
4 Ve'atem hadvekim b'Adonai Eloheichem chayim kulchem hayom
ה רְאֵה לִמַּדְתִּי אֶתְכֶם חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוַּנִי יְדוָד אֱלֹהָי לַעֲשׂוֹת כֵּן בְּקֶרֶב הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם בָּאִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃
5 Re'eh limadti etchem chukim umishpatim ka'asher tzivani Adonai Elohai la'asot ken bekerev ha'aretz asher atem ba'im shamah lerishtah
ו וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם כִּי הִוא חָכְמַתְכֶם וּבִינַתְכֶם לְעֵינֵי הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁמְעוּן אֵת כָּל הַחֻקִּים הָאֵלֶּה וְאָמְרוּ רַק עַם חָכָם וְנָבוֹן הַגּוֹי הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה׃
6 Ushmartem va'asitem ki hi chochmatchem uvinatchem le'einei ha'amim asher yishme'un et kol hachukim ha'eleh ve'amru rak am chacham venavon hagoy hagadol hazeh
ז כִּי מִי גוֹי גָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ אֱלֹהִים קְרֹבִים אֵלָיו כַּידוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ בְּכָל קָרְאֵנוּ אֵלָיו׃
7 Ki mi goy gadol asher lo Elohim kerovim elav k'Adonai Eloheinu bechol kor'enu elav
ח וּמִי גּוֹי גָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים צַדִּיקִם כְּכֹל הַתּוֹרָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן לִפְנֵיכֶם הַיּוֹם׃
8 Umi goy gadol asher lo chukim umishpatim tzadikim kechol haTorah hazot asher anochi noten lifneichem hayom
ט רַק הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ וּשְׁמֹר נַפְשְׁךָ מְאֹד פֶּן תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר רָאוּ עֵינֶיךָ וּפֶן יָסוּרוּ מִלְּבָבְךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ וְהוֹדַעְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְלִבְנֵי בָנֶיךָ׃
9 Rak hishamer lecha ushmor nafshecha me'od pen tishkach et hadevarim asher rau einecha ufen yasuru milevavcha kol yemei chayecha vehoda'tam levanecha velivnei vanecha
י יוֹם אֲשֶׁר עָמַדְתָּ לִפְנֵי יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּחֹרֵב בֶּאֱמֹר יְדוָד אֵלַי הַקְהֶל לִי אֶת הָעָם וְאַשְׁמִעֵם אֶת דְּבָרָי אֲשֶׁר יִלְמְדוּן לְיִרְאָה אֹתִי כָּל הַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר הֵם חַיִּים עַל הָאֲדָמָה וְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶם יְלַמֵּדוּן׃
10 Yom asher amadta lifnei Adonai Elohecha beChorev be'emor Adonai elai hak'hel li et ha'am ve'ashmi'em et devarai asher yilmedun leyir'ah oti kol hayamim asher hem chayim al ha'adamah ve'et beneihem yelamedun
יא וַתִּקְרְבוּן וַתַּעַמְדוּן תַּחַת הָהָר וְהָהָר בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ עַד לֵב הַשָּׁמַיִם חֹשֶׁךְ עָנָן וַעֲרָפֶל׃
11 Vatikrevun vata'amdun tachat haHar vehahar bo'er ba'esh ad lev hashamayim choshech anan va'arafel
יב וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֲלֵיכֶם מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ קוֹל דְּבָרִים אַתֶּם שֹׁמְעִים וּתְמוּנָה אֵינְכֶם רֹאִים זוּלָתִי קוֹל׃
12 Vaydaber Adonai aleichem mitoch ha'esh kol devarim atem shom'im utmunah einchem ro'im zulati kol
יג וַיַּגֵּד לָכֶם אֶת בְּרִיתוֹ אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדְּבָרִים וַיִּכְתְּבֵם עַל שְׁנֵי לֻחוֹת אֲבָנִים׃
13 Vayaged lachem et berito asher tzivah etchem la'asot aseret hadevarim vayichtevem al shnei luchot avanim
יד וְאֹתִי צִוָּה יְדוָד בָּעֵת הַהִוא לְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים לַעֲשֹׂתְכֶם אֹתָם בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃
14 Ve'oti tzivah Adonai ba'et hahi lelamed etchem chukim umishpatim la'asotchem otam ba'aretz asher atem ovrim shamah lerishtah
טו וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאֹד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם כִּי לֹא רְאִיתֶם כָּל תְּמוּנָה בְּיוֹם דִּבֶּר יְדוָד אֲלֵיכֶם בְּחֹרֵב מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ׃
15 Venishmartem me'od lenafshoteichem ki lo re'item kol temunah beyom diber Adonai aleichem beChorev mitoch ha'esh
טז פֶּן תַּשְׁחִתוּן וַעֲשִׂיתֶם לָכֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כָּל סָמֶל תַּבְנִית זָכָר אוֹ נְקֵבָה׃
16 Pen tashchitun va'asitem lachem pesel temunat kol samel tavnit zachar o nekevah
יז תַּבְנִית כָּל בְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ תַּבְנִית כָּל צִפּוֹר כָּנָף אֲשֶׁר תָּעוּף בַּשָּׁמָיִם׃
17 Tavnit kol behemah asher ba'aretz tavnit kol tzipor kanaf asher ta'uf bashamayim
יח תַּבְנִית כָּל רֹמֵשׂ בָּאֲדָמָה תַּבְנִית כָּל דָּגָה אֲשֶׁר בַּמַּיִם מִתַּחַת לָאָרֶץ׃
18 Tavnit kol romes ba'adamah tavnit kol dagah asher bamayim mitachat la'aretz
יט וּפֶן תִּשָּׂא עֵינֶיךָ הַשָּׁמַיְמָה וְרָאִיתָ אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וְאֶת הַיָּרֵחַ וְאֶת הַכּוֹכָבִים כֹּל צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם וְנִדַּחְתָּ וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתָ לָהֶם וַעֲבַדְתָּם אֲשֶׁר חָלַק יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֹתָם לְכֹל הָעַמִּים תַּחַת כָּל הַשָּׁמָיִם׃
19 Ufen tisa einecha hashamaymah vera'ita et hashemesh ve'et hayare'ach ve'et hakochavim kol tzva hashamayim venidachta vehishtachavita lahem va'avadtam asher chalak Adonai Elohecha otam lechol ha'amim tachat kol hashamayim
כ וְאֶתְכֶם לָקַח יְדוָד וַיּוֹצִא אֶתְכֶם מִכּוּר הַבַּרְזֶל מִמִּצְרָיִם לִהְיוֹת לוֹ לְעַם נַחֲלָה כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃
20 Ve'etchem lakach Adonai vayotzi etchem mikur habarzel miMitzrayim lihyot lo le'am nachalah kayom hazeh
כא וַידוָד הִתְאַנֶּף בִּי עַל דִּבְרֵיכֶם וַיִּשָּׁבַע לְבִלְתִּי עָבְרִי אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וּלְבִלְתִּי בֹא אֶל הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ נַחֲלָה׃
21 V'Adonai hit'anef bi al divreichem vayishava levilti ovri et haYarden ulvilti vo el ha'aretz hatovah asher Adonai Elohecha noten lecha nachalah
כב כִּי אָנֹכִי מֵת בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת אֵינֶנִּי עֹבֵר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וְאַתֶּם עֹבְרִים וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה הַזֹּאת׃
22 Ki anochi met ba'aretz hazot eineni over et haYarden ve'atem ovrim virishtem et ha'aretz hatovah hazot
כג הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶם פֶּן תִּשְׁכְּחוּ אֶת בְּרִית יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת עִמָּכֶם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם לָכֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כֹּל אֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ׃
23 Hishamru lachem pen tishkechu et brit Adonai Eloheichem asher karat imachem va'asitem lachem pesel temunat kol asher tzivecha Adonai Elohecha
כד כִּי יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵשׁ אֹכְלָה הוּא אֵל קַנָּא׃
24 Ki Adonai Elohecha esh ochlah hu El kana
כה כִּי תוֹלִיד בָּנִים וּבְנֵי בָנִים וְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּם בָּאָרֶץ וְהִשְׁחַתֶּם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כֹּל וַעֲשִׂיתֶם הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְהַכְעִיסוֹ׃
25 Ki tolid banim uvnei vanim venoshantem ba'aretz vehishchatem va'asitem pesel temunat kol va'asitem hara be'einei Adonai Elohecha lehach'iso
כו הַעִידֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ כִּי אָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּן מַהֵר מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ לֹא תַאֲרִיכֻן יָמִים עָלֶיהָ כִּי הִשָּׁמֵד תִּשָּׁמֵדוּן׃
26 Ha'idoti vachem hayom et hashamayim ve'et ha'aretz ki avod tovedun maher me'al ha'aretz asher atem ovrim et haYarden shamah lerishtah lo ta'arichun yamim aleha ki hishamed tishamedun
כז וְהֵפִיץ יְדוָד אֶתְכֶם בָּעַמִּים וְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּם מְתֵי מִסְפָּר בַּגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר יְנַהֵג יְדוָד אֶתְכֶם שָׁמָּה׃
27 Vehefitz Adonai etchem ba'amim venish'artem metei mispar bagoyim asher yenaheg Adonai etchem shamah
כח וַעֲבַדְתֶּם שָׁם אֱלֹהִים מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי אָדָם עֵץ וָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִרְאוּן וְלֹא יִשְׁמְעוּן וְלֹא יֹאכְלוּן וְלֹא יְרִיחֻן׃
28 Va'avadtem sham Elohim ma'aseh yedei adam etz va'even asher lo yir'un velo yishme'un velo yochlun velo yerichun
כט וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם מִשָּׁם אֶת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ וּמָצָאתָ כִּי תִדְרְשֶׁנּוּ בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשֶׁךָ׃
29 Uvikashtem misham et Adonai Elohecha umatzata ki tidreshenu bechol levavcha uvechol nafshecha
ל בַּצַּר לְךָ וּמְצָאוּךָ כֹּל הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים וְשַׁבְתָּ עַד יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְשָׁמַעְתָּ בְּקֹלוֹ׃
30 Batzar lecha umtza'ucha kol hadevarim ha'eleh be'acharit hayamim veshavta ad Adonai Elohecha veshama'ta bekolo
לא כִּי אֵל רַחוּם יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא יַרְפְּךָ וְלֹא יַשְׁחִיתֶךָ וְלֹא יִשְׁכַּח אֶת בְּרִית אֲבֹתֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לָהֶם׃
31 Ki El rachum Adonai Elohecha lo yarpecha velo yashchitecha velo yishkach et brit avotecha asher nishba lahem
לב כִּי שְׁאַל נָא לְיָמִים רִאשֹׁנִים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ לְפָנֶיךָ לְמִן הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אָדָם עַל הָאָרֶץ וּלְמִקְצֵה הַשָּׁמַיִם וְעַד קְצֵה הַשָּׁמָיִם הֲנִהְיָה כַּדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה אוֹ הֲנִשְׁמַע כָּמֹהוּ׃
32 Ki she'al na leyamim rishonim asher hayu lefanecha lemin hayom asher bara Elohim adam al ha'aretz ulmiktzeh hashamayim ve'ad ktzeh hashamayim hanihyah kadavar hagadol hazeh o hanishma kamohu
לג הֲשָׁמַע עָם קוֹל אֱלֹהִים מְדַבֵּר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתָּ אַתָּה וַיֶּחִי׃
33 Hashama am kol Elohim medaber mitoch ha'esh ka'asher shama'ta atah vayechi
לד אוֹ הֲנִסָּה אֱלֹהִים לָבוֹא לָקַחַת לוֹ גוֹי מִקֶּרֶב גּוֹי בְּמַסֹּת בְּאֹתֹת וּבְמוֹפְתִים וּבְמִלְחָמָה וּבְיָד חֲזָקָה וּבִזְרוֹעַ נְטוּיָה וּבְמוֹרָאִים גְּדֹלִים כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לָכֶם יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם בְּמִצְרַיִם לְעֵינֶיךָ׃
34 O hanisah Elohim lavo lakachat lo goy mikerev goy bemasot be'otot uvmoftim uvmilchamah uvyad chazakah uvizro'a netuyah uvmora'im gedolim kechol asher asah lachem Adonai Eloheichem beMitzrayim le'einecha
לה אַתָּה הָרְאֵתָ לָדַעַת כִּי יְדוָד הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים אֵין עוֹד מִלְבַדּוֹ׃
35 Atah hor'eta lada'at ki Adonai hu ha'Elohim ein od milvado
לו מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם הִשְׁמִיעֲךָ אֶת קֹלוֹ לְיַסְּרֶךָּ וְעַל הָאָרֶץ הֶרְאֲךָ אֶת אִשּׁוֹ הַגְּדוֹלָה וּדְבָרָיו שָׁמַעְתָּ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ׃
36 Min hashamayim hishmi'acha et kolo leyasreka ve'al ha'aretz her'acha et isho hagdolah udvarav shama'ta mitoch ha'esh
לז וְתַחַת כִּי אָהַב אֶת אֲבֹתֶיךָ וַיִּבְחַר בְּזַרְעוֹ אַחֲרָיו וַיּוֹצִאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו בְּכֹחוֹ הַגָּדֹל מִמִּצְרָיִם׃
37 Vetachat ki ahav et avotecha vayivchar bezar'o acharav vayotzi'acha befanav bechocho hagadol miMitzrayim
לח לְהוֹרִישׁ גּוֹיִם גְּדֹלִים וַעֲצֻמִים מִמְּךָ מִפָּנֶיךָ לַהֲבִיאֲךָ לָתֶת לְךָ אֶת אַרְצָם נַחֲלָה כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃
38 Lehorish goyim gedolim va'atzumim mimcha mipanecha lahavi'acha latet lecha et artzam nachalah kayom hazeh
לט וְיָדַעְתָּ הַיּוֹם וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ אֶל לְבָבֶךָ כִּי יְדוָד הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וְעַל הָאָרֶץ מִתָּחַת אֵין עוֹד׃
39 Veyada'ta hayom vahashevota el levavecha ki Adonai hu ha'Elohim bashamayim mima'al ve'al ha'aretz miTachat ein od
מ וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת חֻקָּיו וְאֶת מִצְוֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וּלְבָנֶיךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ וּלְמַעַן תַּאֲרִיךְ יָמִים עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ כָּל הַיָּמִים׃
40 Veshamarta et chukav ve'et mitzvotav asher anochi metzavecha hayom asher yitav lecha ulvanecha acharecha ulma'an ta'arich yamim al ha'adamah asher Adonai Elohecha noten lecha kol hayamim
מא אָז יַבְדִּיל מֹשֶׁה שָׁלֹשׁ עָרִים בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרְחָה שָׁמֶשׁ׃
41 Az yavdil moshe shalosh arim be'ever haYarden mizrechah shamesh
מב לָנֻס שָׁמָּה רוֹצֵחַ אֲשֶׁר יִרְצַח אֶת רֵעֵהוּ בִּבְלִי דַעַת וְהוּא לֹא שֹׂנֵא לוֹ מִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹם וְנָס אֶל אַחַת מִן הֶעָרִים הָאֵל וָחָי׃
42 Lanus shamah rotze'ach asher yirtzach et re'ehu bivli da'at vehu lo sone lo mitmol shilshom venas el achat min he'arim ha'el vachai
מג אֶת בֶּצֶר בַּמִּדְבָּר בְּאֶרֶץ הַמִּישֹׁר לָרֻאוּבֵנִי וְאֶת רָאמֹת בַּגִּלְעָד לַגָּדִי וְאֶת גּוֹלָן בַּבָּשָׁן לַמְנַשִּׁי׃

מד וְזֹאת הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר שָׂם מֹשֶׁה לִפְנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
44 Vezot haTorah asher sam moshe lifnei bnei Yisrael
מה אֵלֶּה הָעֵדֹת וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרָיִם׃
45 Eleh ha'edot vehachukim vehamishpatim asher diber moshe el bnei Yisrael betzetam miMitzrayim
מו בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן בַּגַּיְא מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר בְּאֶרֶץ סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר יוֹשֵׁב בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן אֲשֶׁר הִכָּה מֹשֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרָיִם׃
46 Be'ever haYarden bagai mul beit Pe'or be'eretz Sichon melech ha'Emori asher yoshev beCheshbon asher hikah moshe uvnei Yisrael betzetam miMitzrayim
מז וַיִּירְשׁוּ אֶת אַרְצוֹ וְאֶת אֶרֶץ עוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן שְׁנֵי מַלְכֵי הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרַח שָׁמֶשׁ׃
47 Vayirshu et artzo ve'et eretz Og melech haBashan shnei malchei ha'Emori asher be'ever haYarden mizrach shamesh
מח מֵעֲרֹעֵר אֲשֶׁר עַל שְׂפַת נַחַל אַרְנֹן וְעַד הַר שִׂיאֹן הוּא חֶרְמוֹן׃
48 Me'Aro'er asher al sfat nachal Arnon ve'ad har Si'on hu Chermon
מט וְכָל הָעֲרָבָה עֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרָחָה וְעַד יָם הָעֲרָבָה תַּחַת אַשְׁדֹּת הַפִּסְגָּה׃
49 Vechol ha'aravah ever haYarden mizrachah ve'ad yam ha'aravah tachat ashdot haPisgah
ה א וַיִּקְרָא מֹשֶׁה אֶל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַחֻקִּים וְאֶת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי דֹּבֵר בְּאָזְנֵיכֶם הַיּוֹם וּלְמַדְתֶּם אֹתָם וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם לַעֲשֹׂתָם׃
5:1 Vayikra moshe el kol Yisrael vayomer alehem shema Yisrael et hachukim ve'et hamishpatim asher anochi dover be'ozneichem hayom ulmadtem otam ushmartem la'asotam
ב יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ כָּרַת עִמָּנוּ בְּרִית בְּחֹרֵב׃
2 Adonai Eloheinu karat imanu brit beChorev
ג לֹא אֶת אֲבֹתֵינוּ כָּרַת יְדוָד אֶת הַבְּרִית הַזֹּאת כִּי אִתָּנוּ אֲנַחְנוּ אֵלֶּה פֹה הַיּוֹם כֻּלָּנוּ חַיִּים׃
3 Lo et avoteinu karat Adonai et habrit hazot ki itanu anachnu eleh foh hayom kulanu chayim
ד פָּנִים בְּפָנִים דִּבֶּר יְדוָד עִמָּכֶם בָּהָר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ׃
4 Panim befanim diber Adonai imachem bahar mitoch ha'esh
ה אָנֹכִי עֹמֵד בֵּין יְדוָד וּבֵינֵיכֶם בָּעֵת הַהִוא לְהַגִּיד לָכֶם אֶת דְּבַר יְדוָד כִּי יְרֵאתֶם מִפְּנֵי הָאֵשׁ וְלֹא עֲלִיתֶם בָּהָר לֵאמֹר׃
5 Anochi omed bein Adonai uveineichem ba'et hahi lehagid lachem et dvar Adonai ki yereitem mipnei ha'esh velo alitem bahar lemor
ו אָנֹכִי יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִיךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים׃
6 Anochi Adonai Elohecha asher hotzeticha me'eretz Mitzrayim miBeit avadim
ז לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנָיַ׃
7 Lo yihyeh lecha Elohim acherim al panaya
ח לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה לְךָ פֶסֶל כָּל תְּמוּנָה אֲשֶׁר בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וַאֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ מִתָּחַת וַאֲשֶׁר בַּמַּיִם מִתַּחַת לָאָרֶץ׃
8 Lo ta'aseh lecha fesel kol temunah asher bashamayim mima'al va'asher ba'aretz miTachat va'asher bamayim mitachat la'aretz
ט לֹא תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לָהֶם וְלֹא תָעָבְדֵם כִּי אָנֹכִי יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵל קַנָּא פֹּקֵד עֲוֹן אָבוֹת עַל בָּנִים וְעַל שִׁלֵּשִׁים וְעַל רִבֵּעִים לְשֹׂנְאָי׃
9 Lo tishtachaveh lahem velo ta'ovdem ki anochi Adonai Elohecha El kana poked avon avot al banim ve'al shileshim ve'al ribe'im leson'ai
י וְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לַאֲלָפִים לְאֹהֲבַי וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי (מצותו) [מִצְוֹתָי]׃
10 Ve'oseh chesed la'alafim le'ohavai ulshomrei mitzvotai
יא לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא כִּי לֹא יְנַקֶּה יְדוָד אֵת אֲשֶׁר יִשָּׂא אֶת שְׁמוֹ לַשָּׁוְא׃
11 Lo tisa et shem Adonai Elohecha lashav ki lo yenakeh Adonai et asher yisa et shmo lashav
יב שָׁמוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ׃
12 Shamor et yom haShabbat lekadsho ka'asher tzivecha Adonai Elohecha
יג שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד וְעָשִׂיתָ כָּֿל מְלַאכְתֶּךָ׃
13 Sheshet yamim ta'avod ve'asita chol melachtecha
יד וְיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבָּת לַידוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה כָל מְלָאכָה אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבִתֶּךָ וְעַבְדְּךָ וַאֲמָתֶךָ וְשׁוֹרְךָ וַחֲמֹרְךָ וְכָל בְּהֶמְתֶּךָ וְגֵרְךָ אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ לְמַעַן יָנוּחַ עַבְדְּךָ וַאֲמָתְךָ כָּמוֹךָ׃
14 Veyom hashvi'i Shabat l'Adonai Elohecha lo ta'aseh chol melachah atah uvincha uvitecha ve'avdecha va'amatecha veshorcha vachamorcha vechol behemtecha vegercha asher bish'arecha lema'an yanu'ach avdecha va'amatcha kamocha
טו וְזָכַרְתָּ כִּי עֶבֶד הָיִיתָ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם וַיֹּצִאֲךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ מִשָּׁם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה וּבִזְרֹעַ נְטוּיָה עַל כֵּן צִוְּךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת׃
15 Vezacharta ki eved hayita be'eretz Mitzrayim vayotzi'acha Adonai Elohecha misham beyad chazakah uvizro'a netuyah al ken tzivecha Adonai Elohecha la'asot et yom haShabbat
טז כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִיכֻן יָמֶיךָ וּלְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ׃
16 Kabed et avicha ve'et imecha ka'asher tzivecha Adonai Elohecha lema'an ya'arichun yamecha ulma'an yitav lach al ha'adamah asher Adonai Elohecha noten lach
יז לֹא תִּֿרְצָח׃
17 Lo tirtzach velo tin'af velo tignov velo ta'aneh vere'acha ed shav
{ס}וְלֹא תִּֿנְאָף׃
18 Velo tachmod eshet re'echa velo tit'aveh beit re'echa sadehu ve'avdo va'amato shoro vachamoro vechol asher lere'echa
{ס}וְלֹא תִּֿגְנֹב׃
19 Et hadevarim ha'eleh diber Adonai el kol kehalchem bahar mitoch ha'esh he'anan veha'arafel kol gadol velo yasaf vayichtevem al shnei luchot avanim vayitnem elai
{ס}וְלֹא תַעֲנֶה בְרֵעֲךָ עֵד שָׁוְא׃
20 Vayehi keshom'achem et hakol mitoch hachoshech vehahar bo'er ba'esh vatikrevun elai kol rashei shivteichem vezikneichem
יח וְלֹא תַחְמֹד אֵשֶׁת רֵעֶךָ {ס}וְלֹא תִתְאַוֶּה בֵּית רֵעֶךָ שָׂדֵהוּ וְעַבְדּוֹ וַאֲמָתוֹ שׁוֹרוֹ וַחֲמֹרוֹ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לְרֵעֶךָ׃
21 Vatomru hen her'anu Adonai Eloheinu et kevodo ve'et godlo ve'et kolo shama'nu mitoch ha'esh hayom hazeh ra'inu ki yedaber Elohim et ha'adam vachai
יט אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה דִּבֶּר יְדוָד אֶל כָּל קְהַלְכֶם בָּהָר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הֶעָנָן וְהָעֲרָפֶל קוֹל גָּדוֹל וְלֹא יָסָף וַיִּכְתְּבֵם עַל שְׁנֵי לֻחֹת אֲבָנִים וַיִּתְּנֵם אֵלָי׃
22 Ve'atah lamah namut ki tochlenu ha'esh hagdolah hazot im yosfim anachnu lishmo'a et kol Adonai Eloheinu od vamatnu
כ וַיְהִי כְּשָׁמְעֲכֶם אֶת הַקּוֹל מִתּוֹךְ הַחֹשֶׁךְ וְהָהָר בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ וַתִּקְרְבוּן אֵלַי כָּל רָאשֵׁי שִׁבְטֵיכֶם וְזִקְנֵיכֶם׃
23 Ki mi chol basar asher shama kol Elohim chayim medaber mitoch ha'esh kamonu vayechi
כא וַתֹּאמְרוּ הֵן הֶרְאָנוּ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶת כְּבֹדוֹ וְאֶת גָּדְלוֹ וְאֶת קֹלוֹ שָׁמַעְנוּ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה רָאִינוּ כִּי יְדַבֵּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם וָחָי׃
24 Kerav atah ushama et kol asher yomar Adonai Eloheinu ve'at tedaber eleinu et kol asher yedaber Adonai Eloheinu elecha veshama'nu ve'asinu
כב וְעַתָּה לָמָּה נָמוּת כִּי תֹאכְלֵנוּ הָאֵשׁ הַגְּדֹלָה הַזֹּאת אִם יֹסְפִים אֲנַחְנוּ לִשְׁמֹעַ אֶת קוֹל יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ עוֹד וָמָתְנוּ׃
25 Vayishma Adonai et kol divreichem bedaberchem elai vayomer Adonai elai shama'ti et kol divrei ha'am hazeh asher dibru elecha heitivu kol asher diberu
כג כִּי מִי כָל בָּשָׂר אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע קוֹל אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים מְדַבֵּר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ כָּמֹנוּ וַיֶּחִי׃
26 Mi yiten vehayah levavam zeh lahem leyir'ah oti velishmor et kol mitzvotai kol hayamim lema'an yitav lahem velivneihem le'olam
כד קְרַב אַתָּה וּשֲׁמָע אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר יֹאמַר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְאַתְּ תְּדַבֵּר אֵלֵינוּ אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֵלֶיךָ וְשָׁמַעְנוּ וְעָשִׂינוּ׃
27 Lech emor lahem shuvu lachem le'oholeichem
כה וַיִּשְׁמַע יְדוָד אֶת קוֹל דִּבְרֵיכֶם בְּדַבֶּרְכֶם אֵלָי וַיֹּאמֶר יְדוָד אֵלַי שָׁמַעְתִּי אֶת קוֹל דִּבְרֵי הָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר דִּבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ הֵיטִיבוּ כָּל אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּרוּ׃
28 Ve'atah poh amod imadi va'adaberah elecha et kol hamitzvah vehachukim vehamishpatim asher telamdem ve'asu va'aretz asher anochi noten lahem lerishtah
כו מִי יִתֵּן וְהָיָה לְבָבָם זֶה לָהֶם לְיִרְאָה אֹתִי וְלִשְׁמֹר אֶת כָּל מִצְוֹתַי כָּל הַיָּמִים לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָהֶם וְלִבְנֵיהֶם לְעֹלָם׃
29 Ushmartem la'asot ka'asher tzivah Adonai Eloheichem etchem lo tasuru yamin usmol
כז לֵךְ אֱמֹר לָהֶם שׁוּבוּ לָכֶם לְאָהֳלֵיכֶם׃
30 Bechol haderech asher tzivah Adonai Eloheichem etchem telechu lema'an tichyun vetov lachem veha'arachtem yamim ba'aretz asher tirashun
כח וְאַתָּה פֹּה עֲמֹד עִמָּדִי וַאֲדַבְּרָה אֵלֶיךָ אֵת כָּל הַמִּצְוָה וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר תְּלַמְּדֵם וְעָשׂוּ בָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן לָהֶם לְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃
6:1 Vezot hamitzvah hachukim vehamishpatim asher tzivah Adonai Eloheichem lelamed etchem la'asot ba'aretz asher atem ovrim shamah lerishtah
כט וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם לַעֲשׂוֹת כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֶתְכֶם לֹא תָסֻרוּ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאל׃
2 Lema'an tira et Adonai Elohecha lishmor et kol chukotav umitzvotav asher anochi metzavecha atah uvincha uven bincha kol yemei chayecha ulma'an ya'arichun yamecha
ל בְּכָל הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֶתְכֶם תֵּלֵכוּ לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּן וְטוֹב לָכֶם וְהַאֲרַכְתֶּם יָמִים בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּירָשׁוּן׃
3 Veshama'ta Yisrael veshamarta la'asot asher yitav lecha va'asher tirbun me'od ka'asher diber Adonai Elohei avotecha lach eretz zavat chalav udvash
ו א וְזֹאת הַמִּצְוָה הַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם לְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃
4 Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad
ב לְמַעַן תִּירָא אֶת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת כָּל חֻקֹּתָיו וּמִצְוֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּךָ אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבֶן בִּנְךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ וּלְמַעַן יַאֲרִכֻן יָמֶיךָ׃
5 Ve'ahavta et Adonai Elohecha bechol levavcha uvechol nafshecha uvechol me'odecha
ג וְשָׁמַעְתָּ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמַרְתָּ לַעֲשׂוֹת אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וַאֲשֶׁר תִּרְבּוּן מְאֹד כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֶיךָ לָךְ אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ׃
6 Vehayu hadevarim ha'eleh asher anochi metzavecha hayom al levavecha
ד שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְדוָד אֶחָד׃
7 Veshinantam levanecha vedibarta bam beshivtecha beveitecha uvlechtecha vaderech uvshochbecha uvkumecha
ה וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ׃
8 Ukshartam le'ot al yadecha vehayu letotafot bein einecha
ו וְהָיוּ הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם עַל לְבָבֶךָ׃
9 Uchtavtam al mezuzot beitecha uvish'arecha
ז וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ בָּם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ וּבְשָׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ׃
10 Vehayah ki yevi'acha Adonai Elohecha el ha'aretz asher nishba la'avotecha le'Avraham leYitzchak ul'Ya'akov latet lach arim gedolot vetovot asher lo vanita
ח וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ׃
11 Uvatim mele'im kol tuv asher lo mileta uvorot chatzuvim asher lo chatzavta keramim vezeitim asher lo nata'ta ve'achalta vesava'ta
ט וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזוּזֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ׃
12 Hishamer lecha pen tishkach et Adonai asher hotzi'acha me'eretz Mitzrayim miBeit avadim
י וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב לָתֶת לָךְ עָרִים גְּדֹלֹת וְטֹבֹת אֲשֶׁר לֹא בָנִיתָ׃
13 Et Adonai Elohecha tira ve'oto ta'avod uvishmo tishave'a
יא וּבָתִּים מְלֵאִים כָּל טוּב אֲשֶׁר לֹא מִלֵּאתָ וּבֹרֹת חֲצוּבִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא חָצַבְתָּ כְּרָמִים וְזֵיתִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא נָטָעְתָּ וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ׃
14 Lo telechun acharei Elohim acherim me'Elohei ha'amim asher sevivoteichem
יב הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת יְדוָד אֲשֶׁר הוֹצִיאֲךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים׃
15 Ki El kana Adonai Elohecha bekirbecha pen yechereh af Adonai Elohecha bach vehishmidcha me'al pnei ha'adamah
יג אֶת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ תִּירָא וְאֹתוֹ תַעֲבֹד וּבִשְׁמוֹ תִּשָּׁבֵעַ׃
16 Lo tenasu et Adonai Eloheichem ka'asher nisitem bamasah
יד לֹא תֵלְכוּן אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים מֵאֱלֹהֵי הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶם׃
17 Shamor tishmerun et mitzvot Adonai Eloheichem ve'edotav vechukav asher tzivach
טו כִּי אֵל קַנָּא יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּקִרְבֶּךָ פֶּן יֶחֱרֶה אַף יְדוָד אֱלֹהֶיךָ בָּךְ וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה׃
18 Ve'asita hayashar vehatov be'einei Adonai lema'an yitav lach uvata veyarashta et ha'aretz hatovah asher nishba Adonai la'avotecha
טז לֹא תְנַסּוּ אֶת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר נִסִּיתֶם בַּמַּסָּה׃
19 Lahadof et kol oyvecha mipanecha ka'asher diber Adonai
יז שָׁמוֹר תִּשְׁמְרוּן אֶת מִצְוֹת יְדוָד אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְעֵדֹתָיו וְחֻקָּיו אֲשֶׁר צִוָּךְ׃
20 Ki yish'alcha vincha machar lemor mah ha'edot vehachukim vehamishpatim asher tzivah Adonai Eloheinu etchem

The people of Israel are encamped across the Jordan, and Moshe stands within touching distance of the land of Israel. For forty years he led an entire people toward this land, and now he pleads to cross the Jordan and see it up close. The answer he receives is hard and painful: he will not enter.
But precisely here Moshe’s true greatness is revealed. Instead of sinking into disappointment, he is asked to strengthen Yehoshua, his successor, and prepare him to lead the people to the place Moshe himself will not reach. From here the parashah becomes a powerful spiritual testament: Moshe reminds the people of the assembly at Chorev, repeats the Ten Commandments, warns against forgetting and idolatry, and teaches the foundations of faith, love, and education in the Shema. The parashah spans Deuteronomy 3:23 to 7:11.
A true leader builds a future he will not be part of
An idea and interpretation: Moshe’s greatest moment is not the moment he asks to enter the land, but the moment he accepts that he will not enter and begins to strengthen Yehoshua.
This is a rare test of leadership: can a person invest all his strength in the success of the one who will continue after him? Moshe teaches that the mission matters more than personal honor, and the future matters more than our place within it.

The great danger is not always the crisis - sometimes it is precisely the success
Moshe does not warn only of enemies, wars, or hard times. He warns of good houses, abundance, satiety, and comfort.
An idea and interpretation: in a time of trouble a person remembers that he needs help. In a time of success he may begin to think everything is self-evident. This is one of the sharpest messages of the parashah: spiritual forgetting can begin precisely when life falls into place.

The Torah is not meant to stay in the synagogue
In the Shema, faith passes from the heart into life itself: into speech, into the children, into the home, onto the road, into the hour of lying down and of rising in the morning.
An idea and interpretation: the love of God is not presented only as an inner feeling. It is meant to shape the schedule, the conversations at home, the education of the children, and the space in which a person lives.

One can be very far away - and still begin to return
Moshe describes the possibility of drifting away, of exile and scattering among the nations, yet he does not end in despair. He teaches that even from the distant place one can seek, find, and return.
An idea and interpretation: what matters here is not only where a person returns to, but where he starts from. Even the place that looks like the end of the road can become the starting point of the way back.

Not every prayer receives the answer we asked for
Moshe’s prayer does not bring him into the land, but it reveals the depth of his love for it and the depth of his bond with God.
An idea and interpretation: sometimes prayer does not change outer reality, but it reveals who we truly are, what is precious to us, and what our heart refuses to give up. Moshe did not enter the land, but his longing for it was engraved for generations.

The sentence that stays with us
An idea and interpretation: sometimes a person’s greatness is not measured by whether he reached the destination, but by whether he prepared others to reach it.
Moshe’s request was denied, but his mission continued through Yehoshua.
Moshe asks:
“E’ebrah na” (let me cross over, Deuteronomy 3:25).
But a few verses later he is told about Yehoshua:
“Ki hu ya’avor” (for he shall cross, Deuteronomy 3:28).
Moshe asked: I will cross. And the answer he received was: he will cross.
At first glance this is a negative answer. But by way of interpretation one can see here something far more astonishing: although Moshe’s personal request was not granted, the following verses show how his mission finds its continuation through Yehoshua. Moshe asked to cross, and in the end it is Yehoshua who will cross and lead the people.
As an idea one may say: Moshe will not enter the land himself, but his life’s work will keep entering it through Yehoshua, through the people he educated, and through the Torah he bequeathed.
And immediately after he is forbidden to cross, he is not sent to mourn but to strengthen Yehoshua:
“Vetzav et Yehoshua vechazkehu ve’amtzehu” (and command Yehoshua, and strengthen him and encourage him, Deuteronomy 3:28).
An idea and homily: sometimes a person prays that he himself will reach the destination, and God answers that his mission is to give someone else the strength to reach it. This is a message born of interpreting the verses, not a quotation or an explicit statement of the Torah.
This is a great depth in Moshe’s leadership: he is able to take his greatest dream and turn it into the force that raises his successor.
The small person asks: did I merit to enter? The great person asks: will someone else enter because of me?
And perhaps this is the stirring message of the parashah’s opening: there are prayers that are not fulfilled in the lifetime of the one who prays, but they go on living inside the people he strengthened.
