א א וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית לְצֵאתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לֵאמֹר׃

Vayedaber YHWH el Moshe bemidbar Sinai be'ohel mo'ed be'echad lachodesh hasheni bashanah hashenit letzetam me'eretz Mitzrayim lemor

ב שְׂאוּ אֶת רֹאשׁ כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת כָּל זָכָר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם׃

Se'u et rosh kol adat bnei Yisrael lemishpechotam leveit avotam bemispar shemot kol zachar legulgelotam

ג מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כָּל יֹצֵא צָבָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל תִּפְקְדוּ אֹתָם לְצִבְאֹתָם אַתָּה וְאַהֲרֹן׃

Miben esrim shanah vama'alah kol yotze tzava beYisrael tifkedu otam letzivotam atah ve'Aharon

ד וְאִתְּכֶם יִהְיוּ אִישׁ אִישׁ לַמַּטֶּה אִישׁ רֹאשׁ לְבֵית אֲבֹתָיו הוּא׃

Ve'itechem yihyu ish ish lamateh ish rosh leveit avotav hu

ה וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר יַעַמְדוּ אִתְּכֶם לִרְאוּבֵן אֱלִיצוּר בֶּן שְׁדֵיאוּר׃

Ve'eleh shemot ha'anashim asher ya'amdu itechem liR'uven Elitzur ben Shedei'ur

ו לְשִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵל בֶּן צוּרִישַׁדָּי׃

LeShimon Shelumi'el ben Tzurishaddai

ז לִיהוּדָה נַחְשׁוֹן בֶּן עַמִּינָדָב׃

ח לְיִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בֶּן צוּעָר׃

טז אֵלֶּה (קריאי) [קְרוּאֵי] הָעֵדָה נְשִׂיאֵי מַטּוֹת אֲבוֹתָם רָאשֵׁי אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵם׃

Eleh kru'ei ha'edah nesi'ei matot avotam rashei alfei Yisrael hem

יז וַיִּקַּח מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן אֵת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר נִקְּבוּ בְּשֵׁמוֹת׃

Vayikach Moshe ve'Aharon et ha'anashim ha'eleh asher nikvu beshemot

יח וְאֵת כָּל הָעֵדָה הִקְהִילוּ בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי וַיִּתְיַלְדוּ עַל מִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם׃

Ve'et kol ha'edah hikhilu be'echad lachodesh hasheni vayityaldu al mishpechotam leveit avotam bemispar shemot miben esrim shanah vama'alah legulgelotam

יט כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֶת מֹשֶׁה וַיִּפְקְדֵם בְּמִדְבַּר סִינָי׃

כ וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי רְאוּבֵן בְּכֹר יִשְׂרָאֵל תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם כָּל זָכָר מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

כא פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה רְאוּבֵן שִׁשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

כב לִבְנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם פְּקֻדָיו בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם כָּל זָכָר מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

Livnei Shimon toledotam lemishpechotam leveit avotam pekudav bemispar shemot legulgelotam kol zachar miben esrim shanah vama'alah kol yotze tzava

כג פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה שִׁמְעוֹן תִּשְׁעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

כד לִבְנֵי גָד תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

כה פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה גָד חֲמִשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים׃

Pekudeihem lemateh Gad chamishah ve'arba'im elef veshesh me'ot vachamishim

כו לִבְנֵי יְהוּדָה תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

כז פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָה אַרְבָּעָה וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

כט פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר אַרְבָּעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

ל לִבְנֵי זְבוּלֻן תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

לא פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה זְבוּלֻן שִׁבְעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

לב לִבְנֵי יוֹסֵף לִבְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

לד לִבְנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

לה פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה שְׁנַיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וּמָאתָיִם׃

לו לִבְנֵי בִנְיָמִן תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

מ לִבְנֵי אָשֵׁר תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

מא פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה אָשֵׁר אֶחָד וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

מב בְּנֵי נַפְתָּלִי תּוֹלְדֹתָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כֹּל יֹצֵא צָבָא׃

Bnei Naftali toledotam lemishpechotam leveit avotam bemispar shemot miben esrim shanah vama'alah kol yotze tzava

מג פְּקֻדֵיהֶם לְמַטֵּה נַפְתָּלִי שְׁלֹשָׁה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

Pekudeihem lemateh Naftali shloshah vachamishim elef ve'arba me'ot

מד אֵלֶּה הַפְּקֻדִים אֲשֶׁר פָּקַד מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן וּנְשִׂיאֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר אִישׁ אִישׁ אֶחָד לְבֵית אֲבֹתָיו הָיוּ׃

Eleh hapekudim asher pakad Moshe ve'Aharon unsi'ei Yisrael shnem asar ish ish echad leveit avotav hayu

מה וַיִּהְיוּ כָּל פְּקוּדֵי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כָּל יֹצֵא צָבָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃

Vayihyu kol pekudei vnei Yisrael leveit avotam miben esrim shanah vama'alah kol yotze tzava beYisrael

מו וַיִּהְיוּ כָּל הַפְּקֻדִים שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים׃

Vayihyu kol hapekudim shesh me'ot elef ushloshet alafim vachamesh me'ot vachamishim

מז וְהַלְוִיִּם לְמַטֵּה אֲבֹתָם לֹא הָתְפָּקְדוּ בְּתוֹכָם׃

Vehalevi'im lemateh avotam lo hotpakedu betocham

מח וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃

Vayedaber YHWH el Moshe lemor

מט אַךְ אֶת מַטֵּה לֵוִי לֹא תִפְקֹד וְאֶת רֹאשָׁם לֹא תִשָּׂא בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

Ach et mateh Levi lo tifkod ve'et rosham lo tisa betoch bnei Yisrael

נ וְאַתָּה הַפְקֵד אֶת הַלְוִיִּם עַל מִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדֻת וְעַל כָּל כֵּלָיו וְעַל כָּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ הֵמָּה יִשְׂאוּ אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְאֶת כָּל כֵּלָיו וְהֵם יְשָׁרְתֻהוּ וְסָבִיב לַמִּשְׁכָּן יַחֲנוּ׃

Ve'atah hafked et haLevi'im al mishkan ha'edut ve'al kol kelav ve'al kol asher lo hemah yis'u et hamishkan ve'et kol kelav vehem yeshartuhu vesaviv lamishkan yachanu

נא וּבִנְסֹעַ הַמִּשְׁכָּן יוֹרִידוּ אֹתוֹ הַלְוִיִּם וּבַחֲנֹת הַמִּשְׁכָּן יָקִימוּ אֹתוֹ הַלְוִיִּם וְהַזָּר הַקָּרֵב יוּמָת׃

Uvinso'a hamishkan yoridu oto haLevi'im uvachanot hamishkan yakimu oto haLevi'im vehazar hakarev yumat

נב וְחָנוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ עַל מַחֲנֵהוּ וְאִישׁ עַל דִּגְלוֹ לְצִבְאֹתָם׃

Vechanu vnei Yisrael ish al machaneihu ve'ish al diglo letzivotam

נג וְהַלְוִיִּם יַחֲנוּ סָבִיב לְמִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדֻת וְלֹא יִהְיֶה קֶצֶף עַל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמְרוּ הַלְוִיִּם אֶת מִשְׁמֶרֶת מִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדוּת׃

VehaLevi'im yachanu saviv lemishkan ha'edut velo yihyeh ketzef al adat bnei Yisrael veshamru haLevi'im et mishmeret mishkan ha'edut

נד וַיַּעֲשׂוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדוָד אֶת מֹשֶׁה כֵּן עָשׂוּ׃

Vaya'asu vnei Yisrael kekhol asher tzivah YHWH et Moshe ken asu

ב א וַיְדַבֵּר יְדוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר׃

ב אִישׁ עַל דִּגְלוֹ בְאֹתֹת לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם יַחֲנוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִנֶּגֶד סָבִיב לְאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד יַחֲנוּ׃

ג וְהַחֹנִים קֵדְמָה מִזְרָחָה דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי יְהוּדָה נַחְשׁוֹן בֶּן עַמִּינָדָב׃

Vehahonim kedmah mizrachah degel machaneh Yehudah letzivotam venasi livnei Yehudah Nachshon ben Aminadav

ד וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעָה וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

Utzvao ufkudeihem arba'ah veshivim elef veshesh me'ot

ה וְהַחֹנִים עָלָיו מַטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בֶּן צוּעָר׃

Vehahonim alav mateh Yissakhar venasi livnei Yissakhar Netan'el ben Tzu'ar

ו וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו אַרְבָּעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

Utzvao ufkudav arba'ah vachamishim elef ve'arba me'ot

ז מַטֵּה זְבוּלֻן וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי זְבוּלֻן אֱלִיאָב בֶּן חֵלֹן׃

Mateh Zvulun venasi livnei Zvulun Eli'av ben Chelon

ח וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו שִׁבְעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

Utzvao ufkudav shivah vachamishim elef ve'arba me'ot

ט כָּל הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה מְאַת אֶלֶף וּשְׁמֹנִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשֶׁת אֲלָפִים וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת לְצִבְאֹתָם רִאשֹׁנָה יִסָּעוּ׃

Kol hapekudim lemachaneh Yehudah me'at elef ushmonim elef vesheshet alafim ve'arba me'ot letzivotam rishonah yisa'u

י דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן תֵּימָנָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן אֱלִיצוּר בֶּן שְׁדֵיאוּר׃

Degel machaneh Re'uven teimanah letzivotam venasi livnei Re'uven Elitzur ben Shedei'ur

יא וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו שִׁשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

Utzvao ufkudav shishah ve'arba'im elef vachamesh me'ot

יב וְהַחוֹנִם עָלָיו מַטֵּה שִׁמְעוֹן וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵל בֶּן צוּרִי שַׁדָּי׃

Vehahonim alav mateh Shimon venasi livnei Shimon Shelumi'el ben Tzuri Shaddai

יג וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם תִּשְׁעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

Utzvao ufkudeihem tishah vachamishim elef ushlosh me'ot

יד וְמַטֵּה גָּד וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי גָד אֶלְיָסָף בֶּן רְעוּאֵל׃

Umateh Gad venasi livnei Gad Elyasaf ben Re'uel

טו וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם חֲמִשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים׃

Utzvao ufkudeihem chamishah ve'arba'im elef veshesh me'ot vachamishim

טז כָּל הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן מְאַת אֶלֶף וְאֶחָד וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים לְצִבְאֹתָם וּשְׁנִיִּם יִסָּעוּ׃

Kol hapekudim lemachaneh Re'uven me'at elef ve'echad vachamishim elef ve'arba me'ot vachamishim letzivotam ushni'im yisa'u

יז וְנָסַע אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד מַחֲנֵה הַלְוִיִּם בְּתוֹךְ הַמַּחֲנֹת כַּאֲשֶׁר יַחֲנוּ כֵּן יִסָּעוּ אִישׁ עַל יָדוֹ לְדִגְלֵיהֶם׃

At first glance, Parashat Bamidbar appears to be a collection of lists, numbers, tribes, and camp formations. But beneath the surface, something stirring is happening here: a people who came out of slavery are about to become an organized spiritual army - not a collection of people carrying the trauma of Egypt, but a camp that has a center, a direction, and a purpose.

The parashah opens with the census of the children of Israel: they are not counted as dry numbers, but are arranged by families, ancestral houses, and tribes. The total number of those fit for military service is 603,550, while the tribe of Levi is not included in this census, because their role is around the Tabernacle - to carry, to guard, and to serve.

And then a powerful image emerges: all the tribes camp around the Tent of Meeting, each in its place and under its banner. This is not merely logistical order in the wilderness - it is a portrait of a complete Jewish life: at the center stands the sacred, and around it the entire camp. Not the sacred at the edge of life, but at the heart of life.

Several insights that can truly capture the heart:

1. The wilderness is not a mishap - it is a place of building. It is precisely in a place with no stability, houses, fields, or natural security that the people of Israel receive their inner order. Sometimes a person waits for life to settle down before beginning to build themselves. Parashat Bamidbar says the opposite: it is precisely in the wilderness that building begins.

2. Everyone has a place, but not the same place. The tribes are not erased into uniformity. There is Yehudah, Re’uven, Efrayim, Dan, and each in its own camp. Holiness does not demand that everyone be the same, but that each person stand in their own place around the same center.

3. The Levites teach that there are people whose role is to guard the heart of the nation. The tribe of Levi is not counted among those who go out to war, but is charged with the Tabernacle and its vessels. This is a powerful insight: there are battles fought with the sword, and there are battles fought by guarding the holiness, the identity, and the inner center.

4. The banners are not merely identification markers - they are identity. When each tribe stands under its banner, it does not merely know where its tent is. It knows who it is, where it comes from, and where it belongs. A person without an inner banner drifts. A person with a banner knows where they are headed.

5. The great secret of the parashah: the center determines the form. When the Tabernacle is at the center, the entire camp takes shape. The great question is not how many things surround us, but what stands in the middle. If the ego is in the middle - everything revolves around it. If holiness, mission, and meaning are in the middle - even the wilderness becomes a camp of the Divine Presence.

In a single sentence: Parashat Bamidbar is the moment when the people of Israel learn that true external order begins from a holy inner center.

We usually think that the Tabernacle was at the center of the camp only when the people were encamped. That is, when there is quiet, order, Shabbat, a house of study, time to reflect - then holiness is in the middle.

But the Torah says something far more unsettling.

In Bamidbar 2:17 it is stated:

“And the Tent of Meeting shall travel, the camp of the Levites, in the midst of the camps; as they encamp, so shall they travel, each person in their place, by their banners.”

The astonishing innovation: the Tabernacle is at the center not only at rest - but also in motion.

In other words, the Torah does not only teach how the people of Israel look when everything is in order. It teaches how they look when they are on the road, when everything is being folded up, when they are moving, when it is unclear where the next station will be.

And this is very powerful:

A person thinks to themselves: when I have peace and quiet - I will begin to study. When I am financially settled - I will strengthen myself. When life calms down - I will bring in holiness. The idea that rises from Parashat Bamidbar is: no. Holiness does not wait for the next station. Even when you are traveling, even when you are in the middle of a transition, even when everything is temporary - the Tent of Meeting must be within the camps.

And this also explains the verse in Bamidbar 2:2:

“Each person by their banner, with the signs of their ancestral house, shall the children of Israel camp; at a distance, surrounding the Tent of Meeting shall they camp.”

Each person has a banner, a character, a tribe, a direction, a style, and a soul of their own - but all of them orbit around the same center. The Torah does not erase a person’s uniqueness. On the contrary, it gives them a banner. But it demands that they check that their banner has not become the center in place of the Tabernacle.

And this is the innovation that truly captures the heart:

The problem is not that a person has a banner. The problem begins when their banner takes the place of the Tent of Meeting.

There is a person whose banner is career. There is a person whose banner is family. There is a person whose banner is honor. There is a person whose banner is even Torah, but sometimes even Torah can become a banner of ego if the person has forgotten the center.

Parashat Bamidbar whispers to us: be who you are, with your banner, with your color, with your mission - but do not forget around what you camp, and around what you travel.

The deepest innovation here: a person is not measured only by what is in their life. They are measured by what stands at the center of their life.
