17 Ish kematnat yado kevirkat Adonai Elohecha asher natan lach

The parasha opens on a dramatic moment of choice: two paths stand before you, blessing and curse. This is not only about reward and punishment but about a far deeper question: what kind of people do you want to be when you enter the land?

From there the parasha turns to the shaping of life in the Land of Israel: distance from idolatry, the concentration of the service of God in the chosen place, caution toward anyone who tries to lead you astray even when he looks impressive and persuasive, permitted and forbidden foods, tithes, care for the Levite and for the vulnerable, the release of debts, the treatment of the Hebrew servant, and finally the three pilgrimage festivals. Deuteronomy 11:26 to 16:17.

But beneath the list of commandments lies one large story: how you take people who came out of slavery and build from them a free society without freedom turning into selfishness.

The first thing the parasha gives you is not an answer, it is a choice

Already in the opening there is a curious detail of language: the Torah speaks in the singular, “Re’eh”, see, and immediately continues to the plural, “lifneichem”, before you (Deuteronomy 11:26).

An idea and a derashah: it can be read this way. The path of an entire community begins with the decision of one person. Sometimes we tell ourselves: what difference will my small act make? The parasha turns the gaze back to the individual and says: you see, but what you choose is ultimately placed before everyone.

The Torah warns about something surprising: do not be too impressed by miracles

The parasha describes a prophet or a dreamer of dreams who gives a sign or a wonder, and even if it comes to pass, one may not follow him when he leads toward idolatry (Deuteronomy 13:2-6). This is an almost jarring point.

An idea and an interpretation: the Torah teaches that not everything astonishing is true. Charisma, success, a wonder, even an event that is hard to explain, none of these is a substitute for examining the path itself. In today’s words: do not ask only whether it works, ask also where it is taking me.

One of the finest tensions in the parasha is found precisely on the subject of poverty

In chapter 15 the Torah sets up a tension: on one side it describes a possibility in which there will be no needy person among Israel, on the condition of listening to the voice of God, and later it addresses a reality in which the needy will not cease from the land (Deuteronomy 15:4-5; 15:11).

An idea and an interpretation: there is an enormous lesson for life here. It is possible to hold two things at once: to aspire to an ideal world, and not to be naive about the actual one. Not to say “there will always be poor people anyway, so what can be done”, but also not to think that a complex social problem will vanish with a single slogan. The Torah demands that we dream big and help now.

And what is the sign that your joy is real?

When Parashat Re’eh speaks of celebration and joy, it repeatedly brings into the picture not only a person and their family but also the Levite, the stranger, the orphan and the widow, among other places in Deuteronomy 16:11-14.

An idea and a derashah: this is perhaps one of the most beautiful messages in the parasha. A Jewish joy that fails to make room for someone left outside is still not complete. You can set a magnificent table. The question the Torah raises is who is sitting around it.

One word hovers over the whole parasha: boundary

What is eaten and what is not. Where God is served. Whom one follows and from whom one keeps away. What is done with money and debts. What is done when another person needs help.

An idea and an interpretation: at first glance boundaries sound like the opposite of freedom. But Parashat Re’eh offers a different understanding: boundaries are precisely what can turn freedom into a life with direction. A person with no boundary at all may be free to do anything, yet a captive of every impulse that passes through them.

And if I had to compress the whole of Parashat Re’eh into one sentence: life sets countless small choices before us, and the Torah claims they are not small at all, because in the end they build the person, the home, and the society we live in.

And this is perhaps the secret of the first word of the parasha: see. Before you choose, look. Not only at what is in front of your eyes, but at where this choice will take you.

”Asher tishme’u” against “im lo tishme’u”

The parasha opens: “Re’eh anochi noten lifneichem hayom berachah uklalah” (See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse, Deuteronomy 11:26). And immediately afterward it says: “Et haberachah asher tishme’u” (the blessing, that you will listen), and against it: “Vehaklalah im lo tishme’u” (and the curse, if you do not listen, Deuteronomy 11:27-28).

For the blessing the Torah does not say “if you listen”. It says “that you will listen”. But for the curse it does say “if you do not listen”.

This is not a quotation from a commentator to whom I am attributing the words, but an interpretive idea that rises from the language of the verses: perhaps the Torah is hinting that blessing is not the exceptional outcome one must hope for. On a homiletic reading one could propose that blessing is presented here as the track toward which the Torah directs a person. As if Moses were saying: not, if one day you choose the good, perhaps you will merit blessing. Rather: this is the blessing, that you will listen. The good is your natural track. And the curse? There the word “if” already appears. As though falling requires stepping off the track.

But there is something even deeper here. Perhaps “the blessing, that you will listen” means that the listening itself is part of the blessing. We are used to thinking that we will do good and then receive blessing. But the parasha can be read differently: the capacity to listen, to orient yourself, not to be a slave to your impulses and to live a life with meaning, that is already the blessing itself.

And then the first verse suddenly becomes far stronger. This is not merely two envelopes waiting for you at the end of life, one with a prize and one with a punishment. It is two forms of living.

And here is one more small detail that deepens it: the Torah says “see” in the singular, but “before you” in the plural (Deuteronomy 11:26).

A derashah: sometimes the fate of the “before you”, of a family, a community, even a people, begins from a single “see”. From one person who suddenly sees differently.

And in plain words: Parashat Re’eh perhaps does not only ask “which path will you walk?” It asks a far more frightening question: do you even see that two paths lie before you? Because most of the decisions that change our lives do not arrive with a large sign reading “blessing” or “curse”. They look like one more small decision on an ordinary day.

And this is perhaps why the Torah adds a word that seems almost superfluous: “hayom”, today. The great choice of life takes place again and again, today.

Questions on Parashat Re’eh

  1. Why does Parashat Re’eh open with the word “Re’eh”, see, in the singular, yet immediately turn to address an entire people in the plural? And what does that say about the power of one person to change a whole community? - Deuteronomy 11:26.
  2. Why does the blessing say “that you will listen”, while the curse says “if you do not listen”? Is the Torah hinting that blessing is the natural state and the curse is the deviation from it? - Deuteronomy 11:27-28.
  3. Why must the blessing and the curse be given specifically on two real mountains, Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival? Why turn a spiritual idea into geography you can actually see with your eyes? - Deuteronomy 11:29.
  4. Why does the Torah return again and again to “the place that He will choose” yet never reveal in the parasha what that place is? What can be learned precisely from that concealment? - Deuteronomy 12.
  5. How can the Torah forbid a state of “every man doing what is right in his own eyes”, yet a few verses later demand doing “the good and the right”? What is the difference between the two kinds of rightness? - Deuteronomy 12:8; 12:28.
  6. Why does a parasha so occupied with holiness and the service of God return again and again to eating, meat, meals and rejoicing? Is the holiness of Parashat Re’eh found precisely inside physical life?
  7. What lies behind the parasha’s unusual repetition of the prohibition on consuming blood, and what does the link between blood and soul teach about the Torah’s attitude toward life itself? - Deuteronomy 12:23-25.
  8. What is the most frightening thing about the passage of the false prophet: that he lies, or that his sign and wonder may actually come to pass? - Deuteronomy 13:2-6.
  9. If a supernatural event is not necessarily proof of truth, what deeper test does the Torah offer a person for recognizing truth? - Deuteronomy 13:2-6.
  10. Why does the Torah describe the one who entices toward idolatry precisely as those closest to a person, a brother, a son, a daughter, a wife or a close friend? What is it teaching here about the power of social pressure and love to distort judgment? - Deuteronomy 13:7-12.
  11. Within one of the harshest passages in the parasha the Torah demands, before any action, a very thorough investigation. Why does the Torah stop precisely at a place of emotional storm and demand careful clarification? - Deuteronomy 13:15.
  12. Why does the statement that Israel are “children” of God appear specifically next to the laws of mourning and of eating? What is the connection between spiritual identity and what a person does with their body? - Deuteronomy 14:1-3.
  13. Why does the Torah repeat within a single chapter the idea that Israel is a holy people, once before the food laws and once at their close? Is food in fact a declaration of identity? - Deuteronomy 14.
  14. What can be learned from the fact that the Torah allows a person to convert the tithe into money, travel to the chosen place, and there use the money for a meal and rejoicing? Is there a surprising conception here of serving God through enjoyment? - Deuteronomy 14:24-26.
  15. Why does the Levite appear again and again in the parasha, almost like a figure the reader is asked not to forget? What does this repetition teach about the social danger that arises precisely in a time of abundance?
  16. How can the Torah say on one hand that there will be no needy person among the people, and later say that the needy will not cease from the land? Is this a contradiction, a prophecy, or a deep lesson about ideal against reality? - Deuteronomy 15:4; 15:11.
  17. Why does the Torah demand, once in seven years, that a person give up a debt owed to them? What is the release of debts trying to do not only to the economy, but to the soul of the lender and the borrower? - Deuteronomy 15:1-3.
  18. Why is the Torah not satisfied with a command to give the poor money, but deals also with the heart and the hand? What does it know about the psychology of a person required to part with their money? - Deuteronomy 15:7-10.
  19. What is the meaning of the idea of giving the poor according to what that particular person lacks? Does charity in the Torah mean equality, or a deep recognition that every person lacks something different? - Deuteronomy 15:8.
  20. Why, when a servant is freed, does the Torah not say only “release him”, but demand that he not leave empty handed? What is the difference between giving a person freedom and giving them a real chance to begin a new life? - Deuteronomy 15:13-14.
  21. What is the psychological story hidden in the servant who says he does not want to go free because he is well off with his master? Can a person willingly choose to remain in a place that confines them? - Deuteronomy 15:16-17.
  22. Why, in the passage on the festivals, is the Torah not satisfied with your own rejoicing, but brings into your joy the servant, the maidservant, the Levite, the stranger, the orphan and the widow? Can one rejoice at all, according to the Torah, while someone beside you is left outside? - Deuteronomy 16:11-14.
  23. Why, in the middle of a description of festival and joy, does the Torah remind Israel that they were slaves in Egypt? What is the connection between the memory of suffering and the ability to truly rejoice? - Deuteronomy 16:12.
  24. Looking at the parasha as a whole, why does it move from idolatry to food, to money, to the poor, to servants, and to the festivals? Do all these different subjects in fact tell one story about the question “who rules your life”?
  25. And the greatest question of all: are the blessing and the curse in Parashat Re’eh only outcomes that arrive after the choice, or is the Torah trying to say that the choice itself already begins to turn a person into a blessing or into a curse?
