Parashat Beha'alotcha - Insights and Questions

Parashat Beha’alotcha is one of the most cinematic parshiyot in the Torah: it opens with the soft light of the Mishkan’s Menorah, moves to the purification of the Leviim, reaches the cry of the impure men through whom they are granted a second chance in the Second Pesach, and then suddenly, the journey begins. The cloud rises, the camps move, the trumpets sound, the ark travels ahead, but beneath all the divine order, a human storm begins to erupt: complaints, false longing for Egypt, craving for meat, a leadership crisis of Moshe, and finally the speech of Miryam and Aharon about Moshe and the sharp response that follows.

The Big Picture

The parsha begins with light and ends with a cloud of pain. At first Aharon raises the lamps, as if the Torah is saying: before you set out on a journey in the wilderness, you must light an inner light. But very quickly it becomes clear that the real challenge is not only to follow the cloud, but to remain faithful even when the soul complains, longs, envies or breaks.

A Few Insights on Parashat Beha’alotcha

The light of the Menorah is not decoration, it is preparation for the journey

The Menorah appears before the movement in the wilderness. A person does not begin a journey only with a map, food and a plan. He needs inner light. Without light, even a pillar of cloud can appear to him as fog.

The Second Pesach was born from people who refused to remain outside

The impure men do not say: well, we missed out. They ask the question of the heart: “Lama nigara” (“Why are we excluded”, Numbers 9:7). This is not rebellion, this is yearning. Sometimes specifically one who feels distant is the one who births a new gate in the service of God.

The cloud teaches faith in motion and also in stopping

The children of Israel travel when the cloud rises and encamp when it dwells. The deep idea: there are moments when the service of God is to advance, and there are moments when the service of God is not to move. Not every delay is a malfunction. Sometimes stopping is part of the path.

Craving begins when a person forgets how much good he has in hand

The people complain about the manna and long for the fish and cucumbers of Egypt. This is astonishing: they came out of slavery, but their memory does selective editing and erases the bondage. A sharp insight: sometimes the soul prefers the familiar taste of slavery over a freedom that demands faith.

Even Moshe Rabbeinu says that it is hard for him

Moshe says that he cannot carry the whole people alone, and as a result seventy of Israel’s elders are gathered. This is an immense moment: even the leader of giants is not required to be alone. In this parsha the Torah paints leadership not as the heroism of a person who does not break, but as the truth of a person who knows to say: the burden is heavier than I.

The power of a short sentence in prayer

When Miryam is punished, Moshe does not lengthen, does not preach, does not mention his being hurt. He cries out: “El na refa na lah” (“Please, God, heal her”, Numbers 12:13). Five words. A distilled prayer. Sometimes the greatest heart is the one capable of praying for one who has hurt him.

The whole parsha is like a mirror: it is possible to be surrounded by miracles, cloud, manna, ark and trumpets, and still struggle with envy, craving, fatigue and imagined longing for the past. And this is perhaps its fascinating secret: the Torah does not tell of angels in the wilderness, but of human beings trying to learn how to remain illuminated even when the road begins to shake them.

Like a Book in Itself Hidden in the Middle of the Parsha

Before the beginning of the people’s complaints, two very short verses appear, opening with “Vayhi binso’a ha’aron” and “Uvenuḥo yomar” (Numbers 10:35-36). Immediately after them comes the fall: “Vayhi ha’am kemit’onenim” (Numbers 11:1).

Our Sages saw in these two verses something very exceptional: in the Gemara Shabbat 116a it is brought that according to Rebbi, this section is considered like a book in itself, to the extent that there they speak of seven books of Torah and not only five. It is further brought there in the name of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel that this passage is here “kdei lehafsik bein pur’anut rishona lefur’anut shniya” (“in order to interrupt between the first calamity and the second calamity”).

Our Sages relate to this passage as a passage of 85 letters, and this opens an astonishing thought: sometimes between two great falls of a person, even a small piece of holiness can save the sequence.

That is, a person can be at a moment of decline. He has already moved away from Mount Sinai, in another moment he is complaining, in another moment craving erupts. But in the middle, the Torah inserts for him a small verse, a small prayer, a movement of the ark of the covenant. As if to say: even if you are between two inner fires, between leaving the mountain and the next complaint, do not give up on one small verse that will stand between them.

And this is shaking:

It is not always necessary to make a huge upheaval to stop a descent. Sometimes it is necessary only to insert in the middle a small point of holiness, one blessing with intention, one silence in place of anger, a short study, a short prayer, one decision not to continue the sequence.

This is perhaps the secret of “Vayhi binso’a ha’aron”:

The ark does not only travel in the wilderness. It travels within the person. It enters precisely in the middle of the place where the soul begins to flee, and stands there like a firewall between one fall and another.

The smallest holiness at the right time can turn a descent into an entirely new story.
